After being away from home for an entire year and missing all the major holidays for the first time I’ve realized that the best way to deal with it is to bring the holiday to you. On Monday I went to school decked out in my red, white, and blue tee and brought the faculty a red and blue fruit salad with watermelon and berries. I also made all the teachers and students wear an American flag sticker. They had never heard of the 4th of July before, but after Monday I am really hoping that they won’t forget it.
What’s the closest thing to having a 4th of July celebration when you are 8,000 miles away from home? Korean BBQ of course! Since I couldn’t have my barbecued hot dogs and hamburgers this year, my friends and I decided to have our own BBQ Korean style at a $7 all-you-can eat meat joint in one of the university areas here. The 4th of July is also one of my close friend’s birthdays. So after school we had an all out celebration for two very important occasions.
